Sincere Thank Yous

I am always impressed with those who are so thoughtful and very timely with thank yous. It's a quality that I admire -- and many of you possess it.

Tonight the door bell rang with a little boy holding a box from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and a thank you note. He was one of my piano students who just wanted to thank me for teaching him. Inside the box were (3) scrumptious dipped apples. They were so good. Sometimes it's easy to give a thank you without realizing the impact that it has on the recipient. Let's just say that I needed that thank you today.

There are a few times in my life when a thank you is just what was needed. One thank you that I'm thinking of goes back to when I was teaching Jr. High. It was my first year teaching, and the school that I was placed at did not have a curriculum established. I was the only teacher who had to teach 8th & 9th grade, and I had to basically establish my own curriculum with minimal materials. As I was in the classroom before school started, a mother entered my classroom and asked to see my curriculum. I showed her what I was planning on teaching and the books that we would be reading in that English class. She was actually quite rude and told me that one of the books that I had chosen was not suitable for the English class that her child was in. I later found out that this lady was a member of the Eagle Forum -- a very conservative parent group who is extremely vocal. Needless to say, that made me a lot more nervous for the school year to start. Long story short, at the end of the year, this lady sent me the nicest thank you note telling me that my class was her child's favorite and she really liked my teaching style. That is the kind of thank you that you just want to frame.

I really need to be better at sending thank yous. Sometimes it is the only way that other people have to realize that their efforts are appreciated. It's a very admirable quality to have.

p.s. Totally off the subject...but I was thinking about my fast sprint up to the stand last Sunday. You're right, Amy, funny and embarrassing things tend to always happen to me. Many of you will remember when I was pregnant with Devin and I pulled my groin muscle. It was November and Devin was born in January, so I was about as far along as I am now. I decided to be stupid then and run on my treadmill at the speed of 7. I can't remember how long it took for me to be able to walk correctly, but I do remember that it was extremely painful -- and embarrassing. Someday I will post a list of all of the embarrassing moments that I can remember from my life.

What a great thank you treat! I enjoy sending thank you notes almost as much as I enjoy receiving whatever it was I was grateful for. I know how much receiving a little note has meant to me, so I really hope others feel that way when something is sent their way to show my appreciation.

I love sending thank you notes, it makes the "transaction" seem complete. I hate the thought of someone thinking I didn't appreciate what they have done for me (although sometimes I am not as timely as I should be).

It is always nice to receive a thank you note, especially for something unexpected. I am glad your piano student did something nice for you, I am going to send something nice for Jessica's teacher next week. I do really appreciate the great job she does but don't tell her often enough.

Enjoy the apples!

That's a serious thank-you treat, why 3 apples instead of 1? You're a lucky girl.

I've become pretty good about thank-you's in the last couple years and now am pretty hyper about them. I love knowing that I actually told the person how much I appreciate them or what they did for me. How many times do we think we're grateful but don't tell the person? We all need those little boosts and reassurances.

I often think our kids' teachers at school and church (especially church) go unthanked. I've also been thinking about the soccer coaches too. I've got some notes to write today and I'm glad you reminded me of a few more I could do.

Oh, don't post a list of all the embarrassing things! Once it's on the Internet it never goes away, whcih makes denial very difficult!

How sweet to give you such a nice thank you! I always say that it's nicest to be thanked for things that don't seem obvious--like a service that you pay for. I always liked working for employers that thanked me for jobs well done. I know they have the right to expect it of me, but it's really great to know that you're appreciated.

What a nice jesture. My mom grilled to us as kids that we had to write thank you's. I have not been as good about it since we have via email now. But I try and express how thankful I am for the person doing the nice jesture.

Thanks for the reminder I need to do some!

I for one am anxiously awaiting a list of your embarrassing moments! I'm sure you have some doozies...

You're right, thank you notes are fabulous. I've gotten much better about sending them, but I still need to improve on my turnaround time. What a nice gift from your student! Gotta love the gourmet caramel apples.
